However, few people know that illegal drugs are only part of the drug addiction problem of today. Over the last 40-50 years, the situation around the world has been further aggravated by the legalization of such a disturbing phenomenon as "prescription psychiatric drugs" - legal drugs.

In the West, it is almost impossible to find a family that has not encountered situations requiring the use of psychiatric drugs in one way or another. In fact, for most people, they have become an integral part of life; they can no longer imagine life without these legal drugs.

World statistics show a rapid increase in the percentage of all age groups, from children to the elderly, relying to a greater extent on these legal drugs. Worldwide sales of antidepressants in 2002 amounted to more than 19.5 billion dollars and this figure has only grown by an average of 10-15% in recent years. Antipsychotic drug sales have reached $12 billion.

Richard Hughes and Robert Brewin, authors of Tranquilizing America, warn that while psychotropic drugs "numb anxiety, pain, and stress, they also 'numb' life itself... these pills 'numb' not only pain, but the entire mind." In fact, it has been scientifically proven that none of them cure, all of them have terrible side effects, and the addiction they cause ruins a person's life.

We should not forget that terrorists around the world also use psychiatric drugs to process their suicide bombers. Drugs such as amphetamines and tranquilizers are capable of turning any normal person into a ruthless killer for a while. And at the same time, these drugs are actively prescribed by psychiatrists all over the world.

Unfortunately, in Russia over the past few years, a similar trend has emerged as in the United States. Anyone can buy such drugs in pharmacies. Our citizens see these legal drugs as salvation from their everyday problems. These days, it is especially important to realize that the level of consumption of psychiatric drugs is rapidly growing in our society. Our citizens are convinced by many that these legal drugs can save them from almost any problem. More and more people who have no serious mental health problems, or even any problems at all, are being deliberately misled into believing that the best answer to life's many daily difficulties and any doubts is the "latest and greatest" psychiatric pill - a "legal drug".

In the US, psychiatrists have hooked most of the country on legal drugs. Now a psychiatrist is a seller of legal drugs. Even in schools, at the slightest stress, psychiatrists rush to schoolchildren with their legal drugs. Just to quickly isolate the child from the stress caused by the modern way of life. There, psychiatrists are ready to help with any stress, be it problems with mathematics and writing or overcoming anxiety, sleep disorders, etc. Housewives use legal drugs to help them fight excess weight.
Medicines are designed to relieve a person from an illness, while legal drugs (e.g. tranquilizers) only suppresssymptoms that reappear after some time, but with greater intensity. Legal drugs (psychiatric drugs), as well as illegal drugs , are addictive and cause drug dependence. Withdrawal can be much more difficult than from illegal drugs .

At least 17 million people worldwide are prescribed mild tranquilizers. Author Beverly Eakman reports: "Western European countries are experiencing a craze for tranquilizers and antidepressants ." In Spain, consumption of antidepressants increased by 247% in the 1990s. Since 2000, sales of antidepressants in that country have tripled, and anti-anxiety drugs have quadrupled. In 2004, scientists in the UK discovered that the level of legal drug use was so high that traces of it could now be found in water pipes where drug residues had been flushed out of the sewer system. According to Norman Baker, a UK MP and environmental rapporteur, "this is like a hidden mass pharmacotherapy of unsuspecting citizens, and is becoming a real public health problem."
Today, the world suffers from serious social problems of an international scale, including drug addiction and violence, which are growing like a cancer.
